Clinical Care
In 2017, there were 163 physicians specializing in geriatrics in Michigan, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges "The Michigan Physician Workforce Profile" report (here). That amounts to about one geriatrician for every 10,000 older adults (over 65 years old) in Michigan. Almost a quarter of those physicians are approaching retirement themselves.
As the number of providers trained in geriatrics continues to decline, primary care providers will play a greater role in addressing the unique physical health, behavioral health, and social needs of seniors and their caregivers.
